Album Review Music Repeat Of The Week

In Bed with: BED

On repeat this week

A space for rest, dreams, desire and intimacy; one place where you can truly be yourself – vulnerable, unfiltered, un-masked, undressed, the most personal space of every human being:

BED invite us with their music into precisely this intimate space. The Berlin-based band creates a dreamy atmosphere that just draws you in: with curtains of shimmering guitars, beautifully sweeping and floating, ethereal layered vocals and reverberant electronic beats, until you are really close in their intimate world.

BED was founded in 2021 by Argentinian bass player Sol Astolfi and Chilean vocalist and visual artist Nicolás Astorga and recently joined by Spanish-German guitar player Jon Brinkmann. They just released their debut album “Everything hurts” on Bretford Records.

Crediting the likes of Liz Harris (Grouper), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine) and Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) as musical influences, their gender-fluid, interwoven vocals are often repeated in mantra-like loops, making the urgency of the heartache and queer desire apparent which are unfolding further in dream-like spoken-word interludes.

Echoing electronic beats inspired by the Berlin rave scene give their music a super danceable sway. Thick blankets of reverberating guitars in songs like the title track “Everything hurts”, and “Slut” bring a lot of Shoegaze energy along; while other tracks like “Loser” carry a colder melancholic Post-Punk vibe.

The slow-burning fourth single “Heart shaped Bed” is a hauntingly beautiful centerpiece of the album with its shimmering guitars and colossal drums; summoning the spirit of Dream Pop and Shoegaze pioneers like Slowdive.

The artful accompanying music video was just released:

The album was written by Astorga and Astolfi in collaboration with German guitarist Ema Schiller and produced and mixed by Pablo Thiermann and mastered by Jari Antti. BED collaborated with music producer Cybermission for the drums and synthesizers in the opening track “Everything hurts”. The album artwork was designed by Nicolás Astorga.

All credits: Sol Astolfi, Nicolás Astorga, Ema Schiller, Pablo Thiermann, Agustina Gutierrez.

Spellbound in the Red Light

At the record release show @ Kantine am Berghain, the exact heart shaped bed from the music video took center stage and Nicolás Astorga, Sol Astolfi and the shoe-gazing guitarist Jon Brinkmann performed on it. Glowing in red light, the intimacy between the band members was palpable and the audience was spellbound, so get as close as possible to experience it yourself.
