Known for his excessive touring across the US, UK, Mexico and Europe – alongside illustrious like-minded and musically related songwriters and crooners like Adam Green, Cut Worms and Jonathan Bree – and for his immersive in-crowd performances in personas like a mariachi and a cowboy character, The French artist Ryder The Eagle just announced his third album Autotango. The new record takes his DIY spirit to another, deeper level: A nod to and au contraire to the idiom “it takes two to tango”, the theme of his third album is the individual dance of self-discovery.
The first single off of the upcoming album of the same name, Autotango is a catchy ballad with vintage synthesizers and sweeping string arrangements, that were written by Ryder and recorded by US- violinist Jesse Kotansky (who also played with Adam Green) in his studio in New York City.
Ryder wrote and recorded the album in Portugal’s deep south, with his 4-track cassette recorder and synthesizers set-up in an old decaying house by the Guadiana River. The record takes a deep look at the inner self as well as insecurities – making Autotango his most personal and intimate work. The nine songs cover themes like unhappiness addiction, depression and identity issues – seen “through the prism of love”, as Ryder has always been exploring the brightest, as well as the darkest sides of love.
Ryder’s girlfriend, the French photographer and painter Eloïse Labarbe-Lafon photographed, processed and hand-painted the artwork of the record, matching the album’s organic feel – and shot and co-directed and edited the official video.
The record was mixed in L.A. by Noah Georgeson (The Strokes, Devendra Banhart, Adam Green, Rodrigo Amarante, Little Joy) and mastered in Ottawa by Philip Shaw Bova (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, The National, Andy Shauf). The album will be released on April 26th. Ryder The Eagle will go on his first headline tour through Mexico, Europe and North America for the rest of the year.
